Harry Reid International Airport (LAS): 24-Hour Operations
Terminal doors at LAS stay unlocked. Flights arrive and depart through the night. Baggage claim, rental car shuttles, and ride-share pickup areas run around the clock. There is no official opening time because the airport does not have one.
You can walk off a 2:00 AM flight straight into the terminal. You can check in at 3:00 AM for a 5:00 AM departure. The only things that shut down overnight are individual airline ticket counters and TSA checkpoints, which open roughly two hours before the first departure of the day (typically around 4:00 AM to 4:30 AM).
Airport Busy Times: Peak Travel Windows
The airport is busiest during two daily windows:
| Period | Peak Hours | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | 7:00 AM, 9:00 AM | Departures for East Coast and hub connections |
| Evening | 5:00 PM, 8:00 PM | Arrivals from East Coast and West Coast leisure flights |
If you are flying out, arrive at least 90 minutes before departure during the morning rush. Add another 30 minutes for checked bags. During the evening peak, the TSA line at Terminal 1 can hit 30 to 40 minutes.
RTC Bus: Route Hours and 24-Hour Services
The Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) runs the public bus system. Most routes operate 5:00 AM to midnight. A small number run 24 hours.
Routes that run 24 hours: - Deuce on the Strip: Runs the full length of Las Vegas Boulevard, from the Mandalay Bay area north past Fremont Street. Buses come every 15 to 30 minutes overnight. - SDX (Strip & Downtown Express): Also 24 hours on the Strip corridor. Less frequent overnight, but still running.
Most other routes: First bus around 5:00 AM, last bus around 11:30 PM to 12:30 AM. Check the RTC app or website for specific route schedules.
Locals tip: The Deuce is the only bus that serves the entire Strip overnight. If you are staying at a hotel on the Strip and need to get somewhere between 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM, the Deuce is your only RTC option.
Las Vegas Monorail: Hours and Event Extensions
The Las Vegas Monorail runs along the east side of the Strip, connecting the MGM Grand, Paris, Horseshoe, and Sahara properties, among others.
Standard hours: - Sunday, Thursday: 7:00 AM, midnight - Friday, Saturday: 7:00 AM, 2:00 AM
Extended hours: When major conventions (CES, SEMA, NAB) or large events (New Year's Eve, major concerts) are in town, hours often stretch to 3:00 AM or 4:00 AM. Check the Monorail's website or ask at your hotel concierge desk during your visit.
What the Monorail does not do: It does not run 24 hours. It does not go to the airport. It does not go to downtown Las Vegas. It is a property-to-property connector, not a city-wide transit system.
Ride-Share and Taxi: 24/7 Availability
Uber, Lyft, and taxis operate 24 hours a day in Las Vegas. You can get a ride at any time, anywhere in the valley.
Practical notes: - Airport pickup: Ride-share pickup is on the ground level of the parking garages (Terminal 1 and Terminal 3). Follow signs for "Ride Share Pick Up." Taxis queue outside baggage claim. - Surge pricing: Expect 1.5x to 3x fares during peak hours (7:00-9:00 AM, 5:00-8:00 PM weekdays) and late-night Strip hours (1:00-3:00 AM Friday and Saturday). - Strip to Airport: During peak hours, a ride-share from the central Strip to LAS takes 15 to 20 minutes. Off-peak, 10 to 12 minutes.
When Do Las Vegas Roads Get Busy?
| Day | Peak Period | Roads Affected |
|---|---|---|
| Weekdays | 7:00 AM, 9:00 AM | I-15 (both directions near Strip), US 95, Tropicana Avenue |
| Weekdays | 4:00 PM, 6:00 PM | I-15 (northbound from Strip), Flamingo Road, Sahara Avenue |
| Friday, Sunday | 6:00 PM, 11:00 PM | Las Vegas Boulevard (the Strip), I-15 near the Strip exits |
Strip traffic Friday through Sunday evening is the worst. Las Vegas Boulevard between Mandalay Bay and the Stratosphere can move at walking pace. If you are staying on the Strip and need to go somewhere on the Strip, walk or take the Monorail. If you must drive, use Paradise Road or Koval Lane as alternatives.
Getting to the Airport: Timing Your Departure
From the Strip to LAS: - Off-peak (before 6:00 AM, after 8:00 PM): allow 20 minutes - Peak (7:00-9:00 AM, 5:00-8:00 PM): allow 35 to 45 minutes - Friday or Sunday evening: allow 45 to 60 minutes
From downtown Las Vegas to LAS: - Off-peak: 15 minutes - Peak: 25 to 30 minutes
From Summerlin/Henderson to LAS: - Off-peak: 25 to 30 minutes - Peak: 40 to 50 minutes
One hard rule: If your flight departs between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM or arrives between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM, add 30 minutes to your normal travel time. The airport is small for a major city, but the roads around it and the TSA lines inside it get jammed.
